The Forbidden City was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties for almost five hundred years. With nearly a thousand buildings, it is the best preserved wooden palace complex in the world. Touring the Forbidden City takes at least half a day and it is worth booking your ticket in advance, as capacity is limited. Its courtyards, throne halls and imperial gardens are a direct journey into China dynastic past.
